1 Timothy 4:12

Scripture: 1 Timothy

phonto

After reading and praying over 1 Timothy this week, God has placed verses 12- 15 on my heart. I feel that these verses are well known yet not well lived. Do we fully understand what they say and how we live them?

1 Timothy 4:12:

“Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.”

1 Timothy 4:12 is a pretty well known and well loved verse. It’s empowering to the younger generations and fills us with pride. However, I believe we like to read the verse like this,

“Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.”

We don’t mean to erase the last part but we just fly over it as if it means nothing. I am 100% guilty of doing this (if you would have asked me to say 1 Timothy 4:12 about a month ago, I would have only known the first part!). Reading through it now, the second part is the “meat” of the verse.

“…Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.”

The only way that we won’t be looked down upon is by our example: the way we live out our faith, our purity, and our love for others.

I challenge you to read 1 Timothy 4:12 like this,

“Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.”

“Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.”

1 Timothy 4:13, this is what I like to call, a “shadowed verse”. Its cousins are, John 3:17 and Philippians 4:14. A “shadowed verse” is one that is directly after a well known verse. “shadowed verses” tend to be forgotten, the highlighter ends right before the “shadowed verse” begins. This verse is so great! It begins by reminding us that Jesus is coming soon! What a perfect start! Following it’s great start, we are called to encourage the believers and continue to seek the kingdom. Can you talk about encouragement?

“Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you.”

1 Timothy 4:14- Do not give up/ waste your talent! If your talents are given to you by your loving father (which they are) then use them for His glory! Don’t settle for anything less than a “well done my good and faithful servant”

“Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress.”

This reminds me of,” Excellence in all things, and all things to God’s glory”. We need to focus on these tasks so that others will see our progress and wonder who the glory goes to. And to there surprise, the glory goes to our heavenly king, Jesus Christ!

What do these verses all have in common? Three simple words, Set an Example! In all that we say and do, we need to be an example to the believers. We need to rise up and be the light in the darkest places. Who’s with me?

  1. My sweet little Prepster is really showing signs of deep deep thinking and understanding. Your ability to not only see the meaning of the verses ,but to share the application in daily living is outstanding.
