“What is something about which you have changed your mind in the last three years?” (Yale)

Having spent the past few days preparing for the SAT and looking into college options (I’m very eager) I found myself searching for previous application essay prompts from colleges that internist me. Yale, of course, has some great ones.

“What is something about which you have changed your mind in the last three years?” (Yale)

Three years ago, I was an eleven year old with red curly hair and a bow, twice the size of my ear, snapped on top of my little 6th grade head. I was, and still am, in the process of growing up with a loving family that supported me and, most of the time, agreed with me. I believe that three years ago, that eleven year old, curly haired 6th grade girl was realizing that not everybody has the same opinion as you and that’s OK.

In the past three years, I have changed my mind from being able to sing and dance in the grocery store despite the innocent bystander who may not want to see me dance and sing to the shy freshmen who wouldn’t even think about singing or dancing for that matter, in front of said innocent bystander.

That change of mind came from the “reality bomb that blew up in my face” that made me realize that other people have opinions concerning me. At first, when dancing and singing at the grocery store became frowned upon, I was very upset. Then I realized that if that bomb hadn’t blown up in my face, I would be an old women dancing in a grocery store!

I have changed my mind in the past three years from, thinking that everyone had the same opinion as me to realizing and respecting the fact that others have their own minds and can form opinions on their own.I have become OK with that fact and have, in return, had to put my focus on the Lord for the one opinion that really matters, His.

What is something about which you have changed your mind in the last three years?
