This year, one of my very favorite teachers gave us the assignment of reading for 100 minutes a week and writing an essay about what we read. If I’m honest, I really dreaded the idea of having to read! I really found no joy in reading, in fact, I thought it was super boring…! All of those bad thoughts towards reading vanished once I started reading, The Giver, By: Lewis Lowry.
The Giver, Lewis Lowry
Lewis Lowry’s The Giver, is one of my new favorites! I have read it twice this year and still can’t get enough of Lewis’ marvelous word choices and creativity! Lewis has created a new world in which all the people are conformed to a pattern of life called “Sameness”. Each year there is a ceremony for each child under the age of 13 where they all celebrate graduating into a new age. The “12’s” (12 year olds) get assigned a job that has been picked out in advanced for them. Jonas, the main character in The Giver, is assigned a “special” job….(I can’t go into detail, I don’t want to spoil the book :D) Through this job, Jonas finds hope for his community and tries to stop “sameness”. The Giver is a great book for ages 11 and up, in my option. Overall, The Giver is a great book that I encourage you all to read!
Kisses from Katie, Katie Davis with Beth Clark
Wow! This book is so inspiring and one of the best books! Katie Davis shares her story about her life in Uganda and how Christ has blessed her through mission work. If you are looking for a book that will grow you in your faith and inspire you to move to Africa, you must read this! I am definitely a “city girl”, but, Kisses from Katie, makes me want to run bare foot in the red dirt of Uganda; give Jack Rogers to all of the children, hahaha! Katie Davis’ book is truly “A story of relentless love and redemption”. Really, how many of us would move to Africa tomorrow? Kisses from Katie is a “Must read” book that all women in Christ need to read over and over again!
10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know, Kari Kampakis
“God’s plan for you is bigger than you dare to dream. And once you hear His call, only life with him will do!” This book is a life changing book! The 10 truths that Kim is sharing with her readers are crucial for teen girls to know! Between topics including, popularity, confidence, reputation, boys, self-worship, perseverance, patience, image, inner beauty, and self-talk, Kari shares her passion for girls and living for Christ. This book is great for girls, age 13-17. I encourage you all to read this book and remember the 10 truths and live by them!
The Reading Promise, Alice Ozma
The Reading Promise, is a heart warming memoir about a father (an elementary school librarian) who reads to his daughter for 1,000 nights in a row, that means, over the phone if life calls for it! (That was a great pun! hahah) Anyway, if you want a truly heart warming story to read over a break or on a lazy day, I suggest that you read, The Reading Promise. One of my favorite parts of this book, are the quotes from books read during “The Streak” (1,000 nights of reading) on each new chapter. My favorite quote is from the book, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, C.S. Lewis, “The longer she read the more wonderful and more real the pictures become.” The Reading Promise, is not a story that will have you on the edge of your seat, in fact, it will have you wrapped in a blanket drinking hot tea in an anthropology mug, comfortably sitting in your seat for hours! This book is great for any age and is a great read!
I hope these book recommendations turn you into a book worm like me!
XOXO, The Christian Prepster
